China Alien Employment License / Work permit DENIED

Hey everyone, I just got the awesome news yesterday that my Alien Employment License / Work permit / work license was denied because I don’t have 2 yrs work experience after graduating. Has anyone encountered this and then managed to get around it and obtain a Z visa anyway? Is there a time frame in which you must wait to apply again if your application is refused? Some things I’m thinking about: Applying again through offices my company has in Guangzhou or Beijing with my “updated” resume and experience. Going through a headhunting or HR company who may be able to push the application through. Going back to the states and doing some job that is half as enjoyable for 4 times the pay. I would appreciate any help you could provide me with on this topic. Thanks!

Not sure about the time frame in which you wait to apply again, but yes, there’s a way to work around the 2 years thing, and I think you know it from your “updated” resume. Just submit a new resume with relevant documentations and you’ll be golden. Are you handling this yourself instead of your company’s HR? You might want to hire an agent who can help you with the documentations…

My company is handling it, but it’s a smaller company so we’re all kind of providing input on how to get around this stumbling block. I’m not sure it’s a great idea to apply again in SH with “same same but different” documents, I think we’re going to try and get the application through our GZ office and then technically have me stationed here. Anyone know of any problems I may encounter with residence permits or Z visas if my employment license comes through Guangzhou???

There are visa services with “guanxi” out there who can push it through. I have seen this kind of issue get handled that way before. Not cheap but doable. You are on the right track with an updated resume. Just make sure your job experience is also relevant to your new position.. because they will get you on that too.

I had the same problem last year, but in the end it worked out good for me. I don’t know exactly what our HR did, but it took them roughly 4 weeks and I think they hired me as I kind of representative consultant or stuff like this. This is China and if your company is willing to hire you, they will get your visa. No worries. But I don’t understand why you are willing to start working here for a smaller amount of money than back home?! I graduated last year and am on my first job in Shanghai, getting the same salary like in europe while paying less tax + housing allowance of 10k. In my opinion you should have a financial benefit from being here. Again, no worries. Everything will turn out good.

Well I got this job locally, I wasn’t stationed here. In my original post, I meant I would get paid more if I found a similar position in the US with a different company, I didn’t mean I took a pay cut from my company to come here. 10k housing allowance… that is pretty nice. What industry are you in if I may ask? Did you apply locally or are you a genuine expat? Actually I was just in contact the visa guy. Yes he’s very informative and has a couple tricks for sure. I will make a post once I figure out everything and it gets worked out. I think I may be applying through my company’s office in Guangzhou. I’ll just be in Shanghai on a very long business trip.

I did not have 2 years work experience when I applied and it got approved still. You just need to “beautify” your resume, they accepted my internship during college as part of my work experience. I had 10 months of internship + 7 months of actual work and it got approved. Fill your resume with seminars etc that you have attended. I also included a letter of recommendation from my previous employer. Good luck!
